Nehemiah 8:13-10:39 (NIV)
Mario Ross, Elder
Specifically Chapter 10:37-39 “We will not neglect the house of our God”
As I read my assigned scripture, I was reminded of my own personal journey with the Lord. I, like the Israelites, knew of God, but ran away from Him and lived a sinful life. Lucky for all of us, God is forgiving, gracious and compassionate–slow to anger and abounding in love. The second thing that jumped out at me was about tithing and how everything about this principle was to ensure the support of the house of God and His workers.
Many years ago, I remember Pastor Scott teaching about tithing. As I listened to his words, I struggled with the idea of giving 10% of my gross income. As the Holy Spirit was working with my issues, I called my Dad and told him my feelings, and he asked me, “Do you trust me?” I said yes. He then said, “You trust me, your earthly father who makes mistakes, has shortcomings and sins, so my question for you is this: How can you not trust your Heavenly Father? Son, you cannot out-give GOD. Trust Him, He will provide all your needs.”
I can tell you, one of my last things to release to God was my wallet. But I did after reading 2 Corinthians 9:6-7: “Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
It has been a long time that we have been tithing; we do it joyfully and God has always provided for all our needs. Thank you Lord for ALL your blessings in our lives.
