Day 206

Standard

Isaiah 44:6 – 48:11 (NIV)

Dwight Safer, Small Group Leader

A summary of today’s reading is succinctly described in Isaiah 44:6b where the Lord says, “I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.”

We can spend a lifetime looking to fill our lives with things that don’t really matter. Our God is a jealous God, but not in an envious sort of way. Rather, He’s jealous when we give to another what is rightfully His.

Instead of providing you an exegesis of today’s text, I’m going to yield back a few moments of your time. I’d like to challenge us to take this opportunity to examine our hearts. Is He truly your “first and last?”

Isaiah 45:22 – “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.”

  1. I find it sad that God would have to plead a case to such ignorant people that would worship inanimate objects that they themselves have made and place loyalty in such things over a living God that loves, protects, delivers and redeems them. The saddest part is that we are still putting the pursuit of materialistic things before our relationship with our Creator, whether it be money, cars, boats, homes, you name it. We sit and judge these people for being so foolish yet we make very similar mistakes. We hunger for more, a thirst for newer, bigger and better that never ends. In the end we know that it’s all meaningless without God.

  2. Father, today You have asked me through Your Living Word, (Isaiah 44:20) “What is that thing in your right hand? What is it that you depend on more than Me? How is that thing working for you?” Especially throughout this portion of Scripture, there is no question regarding Your sovereignty and the futility of every other god or anything that takes Your rightful place on the throne of my heart. You are clear. You will NOT yield Your glory to another. No compromise. Lord, create in me a clean heart, a heart rightly prepared for it’s only true King. Clear out the clutter and the things that masquerade as saviors. Expose them to me that I may toss them aside. You alone are God. You alone can save me. You alone are worthy of my wholehearted devotion. Be glorified and shine through the cracks in this earthen vessel, made fit for Your use alone. Amen.
