Isaiah 30-33: Specifically Isaiah 30:15 (Good News Bible)

Michael Landsberg, Trustee

Four months ago my wife and I welcomed our first child into our lives–Caleb William–and what an incredible blessing and miracle he has been. Yet with his arrival, as all parents out there know, has come a chaos, newfound sense of responsibility, unpredictability and busyness that we never knew were possible.

In the midst of all of this I received a gentle reminder about writing this devotional as I had completely missed my date for turning it in. So as I sat down and prayed for God to lead me in what to share, and then read and re-read today’s reading while sitting at my computer attempting to come up with an intelligent thought, God continually led me back to verse 30:15. The Sovereign Lord, the holy God of Israel says to the people, “Come back and quietly trust in me. Then you will be strong and secure.” What struck me most about this text is that in the every day busy lives we lead we often miss doing just what God is saying. I know in my case God has humbled me with these words and reminded me that in the busy lives we lead–whether it be a new baby, job responsibilities, relationships or the multitude of other distractions that arise–we need to simply come back to Him. Or as the psalmist states in Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that He is God.”

  1. Thanks Michael, the simple truth “Come back and quietly trust in Me” rings in all our ears. We all wander from time to time and get caught up in the fast pace of the world around us and in our circumstances. We are so blessed that He is a patient God and He waits for us to realize we are relying on our own strength and that of the people around us which always fails. At that time He is there with open arms, ready to embrace us and bless us as only He can.

  2. The world we live in has no shortage of solutions to any and every problem. Self help books and DIY instructions are at our fingertips. But they are not the miracle solution that they promise to be. They leave us empty and discouraged, chasing after the next sure cure for financial problems, obesity, an empty love life, depression, whatever the plague may be. These worldly solutions promise the “thing” that will bring us success, contentment and prosperity in the same way our ancestors looked to strong horses, sturdy chariots and large armies. We, as followers of Christ, have one help. Lord, You are always there. You are unchanging, trustworthy, honest and reliable. There is no fee for Your sure help. All we need to do is humbly admit that we have been chasing after the wind and ask for Your tried and true help. Thank You for Your promise:
30:21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
Let my ears be uncluttered from the clamor around me. Remind me to be still and tune into You.
Then I will know peace, security, success, contentment and real joy. Thank You. Amen.
